Power of the Summer Sun

There is plenty to remind us that we need to balance work and play. There is plenty to remind us that we should reserve various resources for long-term provisions.
The Summer Solstice marks the height of the Sun's power during the year, the pinnacle of light. With long, warm evenings, we tend to extend our fun time, after work or on vacation. If we garden or farm, we enjoy the fruitfulness of Nature in bloom. We start to see the fruits of growth in whatever we've been cultivating and watch its ripening. Everything is in abundance in Nature, including our joys, creativity, energy & vitality.

In some Nature-loving traditions & mythologies, and the cultures which bore them, people celebrate the Sun and the divine masculine energy of Light. Some Northern traditions represent this energy as the Oak King - a king being that masterful, masculine energy and the Oak tree symbolizing the wisdom, strength, & vitality which nourishes the blessings available to us from Mother Earth. Of course, other representations bring this energy to life as well - such as the Green Man of the Wildwood or the Buck-horned Hunter. Both bring to life the fruitfulness of Nature, the requirement of good stewardship, the adventure and joy of the season of Sunlight. Particularly, the lesson is brought yo our attention that we must protect the land and resources which give us life, we should only take what we need so that the land can continually bless & replenish us, and we have much to experience, share, and enjoy in all of Nature and life.

There is plenty to remind us that we need to balance work and play. There is plenty to remind us that we should reserve various resources for long-term provisions. However, these representations of divine masculine energy, the practical influence of the Sun's light in our world, serve to teach us that everything we need and want to enjoy is provided for us. Yes, there's some effort to it; however, good stewardship, harmony, moderation, and gratitude are the keys to ensuring health, pleasure, and continued support in any endeavor we see fit to undertake.

This is also the time of year when love blooms, and since ancient times (even before the Romans!), the weeks between Beltaine (April 30/May 1) & the Summer Solstice - especially the weeks of June before the Solstice - were considered a season of weddings and betrothals.  There are many reasons for this, including weather and location; however, as we honor the heightened virility of the Sun and blossoming abundance of the Earth, it's easy to see that traditions which call a chief or monarch to "marry the Land" for blessings of the community and tribe also call couples together in love, community, family, and property to share in the abundance.  Many Nature traditions of this mindset saw a clan's chief as a representation of divine masculine... if Mother Earth would accept the potential-chief in a ceremony, as She accepted Father Sky in the Great Marriage.  Love is in bloom, and commitments to good partnership & good stewardship are made!

The energy & vitality of the Sun, and the representation of the divine masculine Light, shares with us the fiery passion of Life, Love, & Creativity. How will you celebrate your Summer Sun? May you blessed with abundance, joy, health, & vitality in all that you do!
